Why More And More People Use Kodi Instead Of VLC

kodi vs vlc

Kodi vs VLC. VLC vs Kodi. The streaming content application is eating the toast from the quintessential video player. This is demonstrated by the data from Google Trends, with a downward trend for the player from 2014 to now. What does Kodi have that VLC doesn't? Why is everyone opting for the latter to the detriment of VLC to watch series and movies? We see it below.

What is Kodi and what is not Kodi

Unlike VLC Player, Kodi does not limit its functions to those of a simple media player. The application itself calls itself a multimedia center where you can play any content on demand , either from the Internet or through local video files. So far the differences with VLC are minimal. The reason for being of Kodi has to do with Addons .

VLC data of interest compared to Kodi in the last 5 years. Information taken from Google Trends.

We could define  Addons as small Kodi add-ons that allow you to expand the catalog displayed by the application, as well as the services it integrates. From YouTube and Plex to Spotify , through international radio stations, TV channels from other countries and best of all: movies and series on demand.

Like any on-demand service, Kodi account classifies its catalog as if it were an official streaming service. Thus, with the right tools and accessories, we can watch any movie, series or television channel from the comfort of our chair without having to resort to dubious quality pages or intrusive advertising spaces.

Another advantage of the application over VLC is its compatibility with any operating system. As it is open source software, the application supports its installation on computers with Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, Blackberry OS and iOS , although its use is more popular in Raspberry OS-based systems due to its compatibility with televisions.

It is also compatible with sending content through Google Chromecast , which makes it an idea if we want to broadcast image from mobile or tablet.

How to change the language of Kodi to Spanish

As a general rule, Kodi displays its entire interface in perfect Mandarin Chinese English. To change the language of the application to Spanish we will have to go, how could it be otherwise, to the Kodi configuration , and more specifically to the Interface section.

change kodi language

Within the settings, we will go to the Regional section and click on Language . Finally we will select Spanish. Automatically the language of the application will be shown completely in Spanish.

How to change the Kodi theme and appearance

Kodi supports the installation of its own and third-party themes through the application options. Within the same Interface section we will click on Skin and then on the option with the same name . The application will then show us a list of predefined themes, as well as the option to add as many others through external sources.

In the event that we want to change the colors, the font or the size of the interface , we can use the options shown in the same section of Skin. If we access the Screensaver section we can choose an image that will be displayed when Kodi is in suspension.

How to add RSS news on Kodi

As a good multimedia center, Kodi has news integration through the RSS standard. The option in question can be found in the same section of Skin within Interface .

Once inside, we will activate the box to Activate RSS news . Next, we will click on the Edit button that will appear after its activation and it will automatically download an Addon called RSS Reader.

After this, we will click on the Add button and we will add all the news sources that are of interest to us. These will begin to be displayed on the main Kodi screen as in any RSS reader.

How to create user profiles on Kodi

If the use of the application is intended for two or more people, the best way to divide the content is to create user profiles. In the Kodi configuration we can find a section with the same name. We will only have to select Profiles and then Add profile .

Finally we will indicate the name and the folder within the root of the storage, folder where all the data related to the content will be stored ( Addons , RSS feeds ...).

How to add Spanish subtitles on Kodi

One of the great advantages of VLC has to do with its ease of adding subtitles. As a good multimedia center, Kodi integrates this function natively, although for this we will have to resort to external sources .

The process to follow in this case is very similar to the previous ones. First, we will access the Kodi configuration through the gear wheel on the main page and then click on Player. In the Language section, we will click on Preferred subtitle language and we will choose Spanish or the language that best suits our needs.

kodi subtitles add

The next step to add external subtitle sources is to go back to the Addons section . In Install from repository we will select the Subtitles option and finally we will choose some of the sources that Kodi shows by default.

add kodi subtitles

Our recommendation, since we are going to make use of subtitles in Spanish, is to resort to sources such as Subdivx, Legendas.TV or Addic7ed , although we can choose any of the options. It is best to choose several to have more possibilities when downloading a certain subtitle file.

kodi subtitles

We already have everything, how can we add subtitles to the content that is displayed on the screen? Within the Kodi player, we will click on the message icon located in the lower right corner and then on Download subtitles. Finally we will select the subtitle source that we have added previously and it will automatically show us all the available subtitles. When we have downloaded the file in question, we will check the Enable subtitles box .
