In its guts, one of the latest eighth generation Intel Core processors (up to i7), along with a RAM that we can take up to 32 GB. And with a graphics card that includes the latest from NVIDIA, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with Pascal technology . All this within a body made of aluminum with a powerful cooling system so that the temperature does not rise. And with a backlit keyboard that we can customize to our liking with various lighting effects and the colors that we like the most (16 million possibilities).

A high-quality screen

As we said at the beginning, the Lenovo Legion Y730 is available in two screen configurations. We can opt for a more classic 15.6-inch configuration (the standard size for a multimedia notebook) or a larger 17.3-inch panel. This second option may be more interesting if we do not plan to move the site equipment much. In both cases, the panel resolution is Full HD of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

But the biggest draw is the option to include FreeSync technology . Thanks to it, the problems of tearing or horizontal stripes that occur due to poor synchronization between the screen and the graphics card are solved . In addition, the 144Hz refresh rate will make game images really smooth, even in high-action scenes like shooters or racing games.

By the way, another difference with respect to what we usually see in gaming laptops to use is the reduction of the frames. Thanks to this, it becomes a more attractive appearance and also the feeling that we are facing an even larger screen. The maximum brightness level of these panels is around 300 nits, a good figure but not surprising.

Long live the lights!

Lenovo has wanted to do something original with its Lenovo Legion Y730. And that shows immediately in the design of the equipment. Unlike traditional notebooks, the screen does not open at the edge of the computer but a little earlier. That leaves a gap of about two or three centimeters free. The reason? Create a place for most of the connectors on your computer to go behind the display, at the front. In this way, the sides are freer (they only have a couple of connectors) and space is left to introduce ventilation grills on both sides.

In addition to the improvement in the cooling system (which we will talk about later), these grilles have been integrated into the laptop's lighting system. They shine . Same as the keyboard which has been backlit with the 16 million color RGB space. Not only can we choose the color we want for different areas of the keys or the keys separately. We can also create different lighting effects that add a spectacular touch to this laptop.

Returning to the design, it has been built in aluminum. For what gaming equipment usually marks, we are not dealing with especially heavy laptops. The 15.6-inch configuration has a weight of 2.2 kilos, while the 17.3-inch configuration goes up to 2.8 kilos.

Processor, graphics card and memory

We go with the most technical data. The Lenovo Legion Y730 features 8th generation Intel processors. They are not the most powerful chips on the market, but they should give us a very good overall performance in most games. The most basic configuration uses an Intel Core i5-8300H processor, quad-core and 2.4 GHz power. This speed can be taken up to 4 GHz. The most powerful configuration includes an Intel Core i7-8750H processor , in this case of six cores at 2.2 GHz. The speed can reach 4.1 GHz at times of greatest power need.

As for the RAM, we can reach a maximum of 32 GB . It also offers a configuration with 8 GB of Corsair memory to which we can overclock up to 16 GB.

This technical set is paired with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card with 4GB of dedicated memory. We would have liked to see a little more power with the GeForce GTX 1060, but it will still be more than enough to enjoy modern games without worrying about hitches or performance problems. In addition, it has the Pascal architecture that provides higher performance and is designed for virtual reality.

In the field of internal memory, Lenovo offers many capabilities depending on what we are looking for. These capacities range from 128 GB to 512 GB in PCIe SSD format plus a 1 or 2 TB hard drive. An attractive combination to enjoy the speed of the SSD and the greater storage capacity of the hard drives.

Two-way cooling and four heat racks

There is no doubt that the cooling system of the Lenovo Legion Y730 is one of its great strengths. The key to keeping the equipment at an acceptable temperature at all times is to divide it into two channels. In one of these channels the CPU is cooled and in the other the graphics card separately. This makes it easier to disperse the heat.

The use of four thermal vents helps this (two on the sides and two behind the screen). These grilles might spoil the final design, but there Lenovo has made an excellent exit by making them part of the lighting system, adding to the appeal of the design rather than detracting. We also have 66 fan blades per channel to reduce equipment noise.

Complete connections

We have already commented that one of the keys to the design of this equipment is in the extra space that is left behind the screen. This space serves to improve cooling, but also to house a large part of the laptop's connectors. Thus, in this part we can find two USB 3.1 ports, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port and an Ethernet port to connect the Legion via cable. On the sides we have a USB type C port, another more USB 3.1 port and the headphone slot.

Among wireless connections, the most interesting thing is its compatibility with the WiFi AC protocol. Thanks to this protocol we can connect to both the 2.4 GHz bandwidth and the 5 GHz bandwidth. The former is the one used by the vast majority of connected devices, while the 5 GHz width is less congested. and it is faster and more stable. Keep in mind that we will need a compatible router, but many already have this functionality.

Autonomy, price and opinions

Lenovo has not lavished on the data of the autonomy of this laptop. And that always usually means that it is not one of the strengths of the team. Due to the characteristics it has and the first impressions that users from outside of Spain have had (the laptop has not yet arrived in our country), the time of use is limited and far from models such as the Lenovo Yoga C930. Although autonomy is not usually the goal of gaming equipment.

At the moment we do not have official prices for the Lenovo Legion Y730 for Spain. It is expected that it will arrive in time for the Christmas campaign, and its starting price could be around 1,300 euros .

In short, we are facing a gaming laptop that moves away from the typical appearance and offers us a plus in design that is to be appreciated. The illumination of the heat dissipation grilles draws attention from the first moment, along with the versatility of the lights on the keyboard itself. In addition, its separate cooling system for the processor and graphics card promises to keep the laptop at a good temperature despite giving it a lot of power.

On the other hand, we have a team that complies with good latest generation Intel Core processors , a combination of SSD cards and hard drives and a RAM of up to 32 GB . In short, a gaming laptop that is not one of the most powerful on the market but that knows how to differentiate itself by its design from the rest of the competition. Without a doubt, an excellent gift for this Christmas.
