Canon has introduced the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS, a new model for users who are looking above all for a versatile camera. This camera is compact , but it combines its small size with a 42x zoom lens , soon to be heard. It also has a 16 megapixel BSI sensor, advanced image processor , optical stabilizer and records videos in FullHD. Canon includes a number of special features, such as zoom assist mode or creative shooting. We tell you all about the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS.
Lens and focus
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has a very versatile lens, which will allow us to take group portraits covering a wide angle, to frame details that are very far away. The focal length equates to 24-1008 millimeters, a very wide range for a compact. Logically the aperture is variable, specifically f / 3.4 when we are at the widest focal point and f / 6.0 at the narrowest focal length, that is, when we zoom all the way. The zoom translates to 42x , but with the ZoomPlus option it can be doubled to 84x .
One of the most interesting features of the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is the auto zoom assist function . What it does is automatically adjust the zoom to frame the subjects in the photo. If it detects that one of the subjects is going to move out of the frame, it automatically readjusts it. The lens is made up of thirteen elements in ten groups and also features a five-axis optical stabilizer , a key part of achieving sharp images and videos without violent shake.
In terms of focus , the system is TTL type and has up to nine measuring points with a face detector included. We can also choose a single point in the center to be able to select the part of the image that we want to be in focus. Canon offers several focus modes including single mode, continuous focus, Servo AF, an object tracking mode, and of course manual focus.
Image sensor and processor
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has a BSI CMOS sensor , which stands for BackSide Illumination or backlit. These types of sensors have fewer layers and therefore more light reaches them, achieving better results in poorly lit environments. The sensor measures 1 / 2.3 inches and has 16 megapixels, a resolution wide enough to take very large photos that we can see on a larger screen or print.
Canon also includes a DIGIC 4 processor with iSAPS technology, which takes care of processing images quickly while minimizing the appearance of noise even at the highest sensitivities. In this case the camera allows to reach 3200 ISO, which is not too high, but at least we know that the noise effect will not be a problem.
Shooting modes and functions
How could it be otherwise, the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has an extensive package of functions and different scene modes to get the best possible photos. In the photography section there is an intelligent mode that selects the best of 32 available scene modes , always depending on the situation in which we find ourselves taking photos. There is also another very interesting mode called Creative Shooting . What it does is apply one of the 46 available effects. This mode will store five additional files with various effects. It is also possible to shoot burst images at a maximum rate of 1.6 frames per second.until the memory card becomes full. On the other hand there is a high speed burst mode that goes up to 10 frames per second , but is limited to 117 shots and 4 megapixels of resolution.
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS also records videos and does so in FullHD 1080p maximum resolution at a rate of 30 frames per second. It also allows you to lower the quality to HD720p or even VGA , we will lose quality and size but we will gain space on the memory card.
Design and display
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is a compact and lightweight camera, weighing approximately 441 grams if we count the battery and memory card. Its dimensions are also quite tight and it will be comfortable to carry in your bag or backpack. The design of the camera is quite ergonomic , with a bulky grip- type area for optimal grip. The camera is controlled through different dials and buttons, which are distributed at the top and at the back, right next to the screen.
Speaking of screens , the camera we are dealing with has a three-inch LCD panel , but it is not touch-sensitive , but we will have to move through the menus using the buttons. The screen has 461,000 pixels spread over its surface. At the top of the camera there is a built-in flash, but an external Canon flash can also be inserted.
Connectivity and autonomy
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS does not have WiFi , so we will have to use the available cable to pass them to the computer. That or use a memory card reader . This camera accepts SD, SDHC and SDXC type drives . It has a high speed USB connection , a MiniHDMI to connect to a screen and a PAL audio and video output.
The battery for the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is a Canon NB-6LH, rechargeable and lithium ion. The autonomy in normal mode will allow us to take about 210 shots , but it can be extended to 290 shots if the eco mode is activated.
Feedback
The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is an interesting proposition for users looking for a compact camera that provides versatility for different situations. Its 42x zoom lens is undoubtedly its strong point. But it also combines it with a complete package of shooting modes to get the most out of it and even give free rein to creativity. His technical profile is not the most cutting edge, that is clear, but he is quite balanced .
