But also, with automatic double-sided in all these functions. The new generation of Brother laser printers has received a facelift with a greater predominance of white, but maintains all the advantages for the modern worker of the previous equipment such as mobile printing, a touch screen with large icons or the inclusion of this year of NFC technology.

And all this with a new policy with lower capacity consumables so that the cost of toner does not drown the reduced budgets of many companies. The Brother MFC-L3770CDW can already be found in the official store for a price of 550 euros. We have had the opportunity to test it and tinker with it for a few days at the office. These are our impressions.

Duplex in all its functions

Versatility. That's perhaps the biggest trend that business-oriented printers (both laser and ink) are experiencing in recent years. And proof of this is the Brother MFC-L3770CDW. This printer covers all the functions that a multifunction printer is supposed to do, print, copy, scan and fax. And it does it with automatic double-sided or duplex mode in all of them .

To do this, it incorporates a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) on top. This printer has hardly any direct rivals in the competition that offer this inclusion in the same price range (550 euros), which increases its attractiveness in those SMEs that have to regularly handle these functions but do not have as much budget or space to buy separate machines. .

Good print speed

The Brother MFC-L3370CDW achieves maximum print speeds of 24 pages per minute in both color and black and white. In the case that we use the duplex function, this speed drops to four pages per minute. Although it is a fairly low figure, I have to say that I was surprised that it more than met this time and that it even went too cautious in some cases. It is not the usual trend when companies give speed figures (they are seldom met in real day-to-day use).

One of the technical sections that Brother has worked on is the time to print the first page. We went from 16 seconds on the Brother MFC-9340CDW to 14 seconds on this updated model .

By the way, the recommended monthly volume is up to 1,500 impressions per month . This is the maximum number recommended by Brother for the printer to function without problems throughout its useful life. In case there are months in which we have to make more intensive use of the equipment, the limit is 30,000 impressions per month.

Handling of paper and weights

Another novelty that comes in this team is the lack of a manual feed slot. This has been changed to a 30-sheet multipurpose tray that will give us more options when printing in different formats (without having to change the type of paper in the main tray). Speaking of the main tray, it has a standard capacity of 250 sheets.

The other change comes in the field of grammage. In the previous model, the maximum weight allowed was 105 grams. With the Brother MFC-L3770CDW, this weight goes up to 163 gsm in both the multipurpose tray and the input tray . That is, we can deal with harder supports such as cardboard or envelopes without problems.

In the case of the 50-sheet automatic document feeder, the maximum weight is 90 g, which is traditional for this type of tray. The printer's output tray has a maximum capacity of 150 sheets face down.

Copier, scanner and fax

We have already said that one of the main attractions of the MFC-L3770CDW is the automatic double-sided in all its functions. In the case of the copier, the print speeds are traced. That is, a maximum of 24 pages per minute in both color and black and white. And in the case of using duplexes, it drops to 4 copies per minute. The maximum resolution remains at 600 x 600 dpi and we can work with reductions up to 25% or increases up to 400%.

We can take advantage of the scanner both through the ADF and the glass. The difference is in the quality of the scan that we can achieve. The ADF only achieves a resolution of up to 600 x 600 dpi, while through the glass the quality is up to 2,400 x 600 dpi. Of course, the use of the feeder will be much more comfortable if we have to work with large documents and it has the duplex function. Scanning speeds are 27 images per minute in mono and 21 images per minute in color.

Although we will talk more in depth about mobile connectivity later, the option to scan documents directly through the mobile stands out. We can also make use of OCR recognition to be able to work with the resulting file in programs like Word. Other options include sending documents via email or online.

Lastly, the Brother MFC-L3770CDW incorporates fax. It is a tool that is being used less and less, although it is still in demand in certain professional environments. The fax has a speed of 33.6 Kbps .

Touch screen with a simple interface

The Brother MFC-L3770CDW incorporates a 9.3 cm touch screen . It is not a very large panel but the advantage is that the icons in the company's interface are very large, so that its handling is very useful. For years I have been saying how much I like the use of Brother printers, a statement that I continue to maintain. The icons are distributed intuitively on the screen and the shortcuts are a very interesting tool to access the functions we use regularly in a single click.

For example, we can create a shortcut to scan the DNI through the glass . Or configure specific printing parameters when we want to print card stock. I also find it very useful that we have the current toner levels at a first glance, from the main screen. What doesn't convince me at this point is access to web apps. The truth is that in these menus much of the agility of the rest of the interface is lost. Nor is it an addition that arouses much fury among most professionals.

Updated design in white

Another novelty that we find in the new Brother printers is a more modern touch in its design. Basically, the predominance of black in previous shots with white is changed. The black is now for the area of ​​the touch screen and the output tray.

By the way, keep in mind that this printer is not very tall, but it does have a lot of depth . Nothing more and nothing less than 52.3 centimeters deep. It is something that can be more problematic when looking for a corner in offices with little free space. The touch screen does not stand out as it happens with other models, but it is more collected. The extra space that remains is used in one of the corners to house the NFC touchpoint.

In addition, a USB slot has been included on the front to connect a memory and be able to print directly from the support or save our scans there. By the way, there are some formats that are not supported for printing from USB such as DOCX. To avoid problems, the most practical thing is to convert our documents to PDF before carrying out printing.

Mobile connectivity

As usual, the Brother printer is compatible with the vast majority of connections available for both mobile and Internet. For example, it incorporates both WiFi and an Ethernet slot to connect the printer via cable. In addition, with WiFi Direct, any client who needs to print on the computer can do so without us giving them the WiFi password.

In the mobile field, we can start with the NFC technology itself . It is a touch technology that many mobiles include and that will allow us to quickly print on the computer. Of course, in this case we will have to use the app of the Brother iPrint & Scan company . The truth is that it is a very attractive app that makes life much easier. As I had anticipated before, we have the option to print or scan directly to the mobile. The app gives us the option of working with different formats that we have hosted in the cloud (Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive or OneDrive) or web pages that we want to print through a simple integrated browser.

Consumables with less capacity and lower cost

It is the latest change to the new range of Brother printers. The company has decided to offer toner with a lower capacity (around 1,000 printed pages) that also has a lower purchase cost . The problem is that with this proposal the cost per page also rises compared to the previous offer. To balance it, we have a savings pack with the four toners for 205 euros . Black toner with a capacity of 1,000 pages costs 56 euros, while color toners go up to 61 euros.

On the other hand, the long-life or XL toners in turn increase the capacity with up to 3,000 printed pages in the case of black toner (for 92 euros). Color toners can print 2,300 pages and are priced at € 110.

The best news is that the drum has gone from a maximum of 15,000 printed pages to 18,000.

The Brother MFC-L3770CDW printer is priced at 550 euros . In short, we are facing a laser equipment that can be defined as off-road. It has all the functions of a multifunction, automatic duplex in all of them , good printing speeds without clipping and all the mobile connectivity options.
