The Samsung Galaxy S9 +, which is already a reality, has arrived at MWC 2018 to establish a new quality canon in high-end mobiles . Larger screen, better camera, augmented reality, improved audio and a power of heart attack is what we can find in this device.
We are going to do a detailed review of all the new features of the Samsung Galaxy S9 + , as well as some functions that we could not find in its predecessor.
Infinite (plus) screen
The infinite screen of the Galaxy S8 and S8 + with 18: 9 aspect ratio has become a standard for the following launches that we got to know during the last year. However, Samsung has wanted to go a step further with the new Galaxy S9 + .
Taking advantage, if possible, of the upper and lower margins, this terminal offers a 6.2-inch screen with a ratio of 18.5: 9 . The panel is Super AMOLED and the resolution is QuadHD +.
To improve navigation on this new screen, the Samsung Galaxy S9 + software offers its own panoramic mode menus that allow us to continue watching a movie while answering a message. It's multitasking at its finest.
Small design changes
The general design line that began with the Galaxy S8 and that later has accompanied the Galaxy Note 8 and even the Galaxy A8 is maintained with this new generation. With the screen curved on both sides, the measurements are 158 mm x 73.8 mm x 8.5 millimeters, practically the same in height and width, and only 0.4 millimeters thicker than its predecessor.
The weight does increase, exactly 10 grams more compared to the Galaxy S8, probably due to the inclusion of the dual rear camera. The rear is in fact the main different element in terms of design : the double camera is mounted vertically, with the fingerprint reader located immediately below. On the right, the flash. It is interesting (and a relief for many) to confirm that the Samsung Galaxy S9 + maintains the minijack audio port . Dual aperture camera
The dual rear camera, which debuted at Samsung with the Galaxy Note 8, is now officially part of the Galaxy S9's older brother. For this model, two 12-megapixel lenses were available. One of them, with a variable aperture ranging between f / 1.5 and 2.4, adjusts to the situation at any given time, whether it is night, day or if the light is dim. Consequently, it manages to improve the brightness by up to 28% compared to the results of the Galaxy s8. The second lens is a telephoto lens with f / 1.5 aperture that allows you to add perspective to photos and play with blurring.
This camera packs some truly amazing features, like Multi-Frame Reduction, which manages to capture up to 12 shots at once to reduce noise in the final photo by up to 30%. Another interesting tool is super slow motion. With this we can reach up to 960 frames per second at HD resolution.
As for the front camera, we find an 8 megapixel sensor with f / 1.7 aperture and the possibility of recording video in Full HD, which has to guarantee us some top quality selfies even in low light.
Augmented reality
Apple raised the challenge by including support for augmented reality in its latest iPhones, and Samsung has responded. The famous animoji will have their equivalent in Samsung with the AR Emoji . Taking a picture of us, the facial recognition software detects up to 100 points of the face, being able to transform our expression into an emoticon. Afterwards, it can be shared as a GIF or as an image.
The Bixby virtual assistant now includes Bixby Vision, which can show places in augmented reality , as well as translate text in real time or detect food, identify it and recognize its calories, among other functions.
(Faster) operation
We are not surprised to discover in the Samsung Galaxy S9 + a more powerful and renewed chip, it is the Exynos 9810, accompanied by 6 GB of RAM , which makes this terminal into a bullet. As for storage, the minimum is 64 GB, but we will have models up to 256 GB. In any case, we will have an improved microSD slot that allows you to expand the memory by up to 400 GB. That's a lot of photos and a lot of videos.
Android 8
The Galaxy S9 + software is Android 8 Oreo, with the Samsung firmware that we already saw in the previous model. Among the most important proprietary apps we find a Samsung Dex with a renewed design, which allows us to discriminate which applications we want to be active when connecting the mobile, as well as customize it for business. Our mobile can thus become a mouse , so we only have to connect the keyboard and screen to have a desktop computer in a matter of seconds.
Availability and price
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + is already in pre-sale, with approximate first shipping dates of March 8. The price maintains the line of the latest high-end terminals, being 950 euros . It is an imposing price, although it is explained by the cutting-edge hardware that we find in this Samsung beast.
