LG OLED W7, first-rate image on a paper-thin TV

SEAL-LG-OLED-W7-Signature Awards 2017 your expertIt offers design, intelligence and one of the best images of the moment. The LG OLED W7 Signature TV  is positioned as the flagship of the South Korean firm LG. A screen that works thanks to its OLED panel (Organic Light-Emitting Diode). An electroluminescent screen that does not need backlights or LEDs on the sides.

Thanks to this, we find an ultra-slim design television . In fact, the complete TV is only 3 millimeters thick and is hung by a new system of magnets . It is available in two screen sizes: 65 and 77 inches, both with 4K resolution (UHD, Ultra High Definition) that multiplies by four the resolution of the already popular Full HD (High Definition). A striking point is the weight. Being so thin, LG engineers have come up with a 65-inch TV that weighs just 8 kilos. Quite an achievement.

Of course, apart from the extreme thinness, the LG OLED W7 includes the latest imaging technology company . For example, it supports all current and future HDR standards. In addition, it comes with an interesting sound bar that offers Dolby Atmos audio. So, as you can imagine, it is not a cheap TV. The LG OLED W7 is sold in 65 and 77 inches, with a price that starts at 9,000 euros.

Design

Although there are many aspects that stand out in the design of the LG OLED W7, its extreme thinness is, without a doubt, the most remarkable thing . LG calls the design of the W7 "Wallpaper", and the truth is that it is easy to understand why. We only have to see the TV in profile to realize how fine it is.

But this level of slenderness needs to be quantified. According to its data sheet, the LG OLED W7 has a thickness of only 3 mm . That is, it is not as thin as a sheet of paper, but it is less than half that, for example, the narrowest mobiles. When mounted on the wall this thickness increases to 3.85 millimeters, hence LG ensures that the W7 remains "glued" to the wall.

And it is practically literal, because to achieve this "ridiculous" separation a new system of magnets has been used . The TV includes the special bracket to hang it. This bracket is screwed to the wall and the TV is placed on it, as if we were gluing it. It is actually held on to some small hidden magnetic brackets. This mounting system is greatly helped by the weight of the TV, only 8 kg for the 65-inch model.

Of course, to achieve such a thin panel, LG has had to take all the connections and speakers "out of the TV . " So instead of using an external junction box, the Koreans have decided to include a sound bar. We will talk about it later, but basically it is a bar that includes the speakers and the connections of the TV.

That is, it is essential for the operation of the same. The bar connects to the TV using a white flat cable . It's a fairly inconspicuous cable, but it spoils the illusion that the TV is part of the wall. One detail to keep in mind is that the LG OLED W7 is designed to hang on the wall, it does not include any type of base.

Picture quality

Due to the absence of backlighting, OLED TVs are capable of pure black , impossible to achieve in other technology. But we already had this last year, since it is a characteristic of this type of panel.

Thorough LG OLED W7 image quality

So this year LG has focused on increasing the brightness of OLED panels, one of the weak points of OLED technology. Specifically, the manufacturer says that the OLED panels of 2017 are 25% brighter than those of 2016 .

This increased brightness, together with the pure black, makes the rest of the colors much more vivid. So much so that the LG OLED W7 displays more than 1 trillion colors on its 10-bit panel. According to LG, the W7 is capable of displaying 98.5% of the DCI-P3 color space .

Of course, increasing the brightness also favors the reproduction of HDR images. And more considering that the LG OLED W7 is compatible with all HDR standards on the market . That is, we can reproduce HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but also the future HLG and TECHNICOLOR. In addition, this year LG OLED televisions have HDR Converter. This is a function that enhances normal images to bring the images closer to HDR quality.

Dolby Atmos sound

Your Expert RecommendedAs we mentioned, the design concept that LG has sought in the W7 is not compatible with speakers and internal connections. So the Koreans have solved it by placing the connections and speakers in a separate module. They have specifically designed a sound bar with Dolby Atmos technology .

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound system in which sounds move according to the objects in the video. In other words, sound engineers can place each sound practically where they want. This makes the sound appear to be moving in all directions. Of course, to achieve authentic Dolby Atmos sound we need a complex speaker system. However, LG's soundbar has speakers that are raised to try and emulate 360-degree sound .

Inside it includes a 4.2 channel system, with a total power of 60 watts . In the bar we also find the connections. Specifically, the LG OLED W7 has 4 HDMI inputs, 3 USB ports, an optical output and a headphone jack. At the wireless level we have 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth.

Smart TV with webOS 3.5

To top it all off, the LG OLED W7 has a Smart TV system. Specifically, it includes the webOS 3.5 system . Basically we have a simple and fast system to use. In webOS we can find the most popular applications, such as Netflix, YouTube or Amazon Video.

The design is still very similar to other versions. In addition, LG continues to rely on the Magic Remote for a great user experience . And, of course, we can enjoy 4K HDR content from Netflix directly from the TV.

Price and availability

In short, we are facing one of the most impressive televisions of the year . LG has achieved a design that leaves no one indifferent. To that it has added a great image quality and its reliable Smart TV system. All this seasoned with the sound bar, which improves the standard audio of any television.

But of course, all this waste of design and technology has to be paid for. The LG OLED W7 is already available in the market with a price starting from 9,000 euros for the 65-inch model .
