Within the segment of low cost phones, the Alcatel POP 3 has a relevant gap. The device, already available in the market, stands out especially for having some of the characteristics most demanded by users looking for a simple device without major complications. The phone can be found in two different screen sizes (5 and 5.5 inches), which differ from each other by some features and price. In any case, this is not an expensive device. Its value starts at 100 euros, not exceeding 150 euros in free format. The company has designed a handy, comfortable mobile whose front part reminds a bit of the iPhone, saving the distances, of course. We see a home button, the full protagonist , which leaves the hard work for the touch screen at all times. We tell you all the details below.
Display and layout
As we say, the Alcatel POP 3 can be found in two different screen sizes. On the one hand, we can choose a 5-inch panel with TFT technology. On the other, a 5.5-inch one, which falls into the phablet category and is more suitable for those who are looking for larger phones (halfway between a tablet and a phone). In your case, the technology used is IPS , which will provide better quality when viewing content. In both cases the resolution is somewhat low: 854 × 480 pixels (FWVGA).
Regarding the design, the two models have discreet, smooth and practical lines, which remind a little, if we look at it from the front, to the Apple phone . Only in the front, the back has the POP logo positioned right in the middle, above we see the camera and flash, in addition to the speaker, located next to it. Alcatel has not taken much care of the thickness in this model. The phone has one of almost 10 millimeters, which makes it a rather crude device. Still, it looks ergonomic and not too fiddly to handle with your hands.
Camera and multimedia
In the camera section, the Alcatel POP 3 is still positioned as a restrained device and without major pretensions. It has a 5 megapixel main that is capable of making videos in HD quality . It has an LED flash, which will allow us to capture an image in dark places. It also has some interesting functions, such as autofocus or face detection. For its part, the secondary camera is 2 megapixels, very basic and that will only give us the possibility of making video conferences and fairly simple selfies.
Alcatel doesn't seem to have put much emphasis on sound. The phone complies with the most basic standards, although it is true that it has an FM radio tuner, something that always comes in handy for those times when we do not have an Internet connection. The external speaker, which offers medium quality sound, is located at the top front of the device. It also has a microphone.
Power and memory
As we mentioned at the beginning, the Alcatel POP 3 can be purchased in two types of screen size, which differ from each other also by other characteristics. The 5-inch size has a quad-core processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210, running at a speed of 1.1 GHz. The 5.5-inch panel device is powered by a Mediatek MT6580 chip , somewhat more powerful, but it is accompanied by a 1GB RAM (in both cases it is only one giga). Therefore, we are not facing a phone with too much power, although it is true that it will be enough for average use, such as browsing, watching some videos, or using basic applications such as Facebook or WhatsApp .
Regarding the internal memory, the Alcatel POP 3 has an 8GB memory , quite scarce, but which can be easily expanded thanks to a MicroSD memory card of up to 128GB. In any case, we must not forget that there are cloud storage services such as DropBox or OneDrive, which offer free gigabytes so that we can save our data comfortably. Then we can use them at any time and place.
Operating system and applications
The Alcatel POP 3 is governed by Android 5.1 Lollipop, one of the most recent versions of the platform. This will allow you to enjoy some new functions. Highlight the Material Design user interface , which adds more color, minimalism and modernity to Android , or the intelligent notification system, which allows us to see them directly from the unlock screen itself. Also, as in each of the new versions of the system, we will find greater stability and better overall performance when using its functions. And, since it is Android , we can access Google Play at any time to download the best applications available.
Connectivity and autonomy
Despite the fact that it is a low-cost phone, the terminal offers the possibility that we can connect to high-speed 4G networks , with all that this implies (more speed when downloading files). For the rest, a wide bunch of connectivity options have also been added so that we do not have problems when it comes to handling it in different situations. Thus we also find WiFi n connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and Assisted GPS. Regarding autonomy, the Alcatel POP 3 equips a 2,000 mAh removable battery, which allows us to use it for more than 5 hours and keep it idle for about 200, according to the manufacturer.
Availability and opinions
Alcatel's low cost phone is now available at a price that starts at 110 euros and goes up to 140 euros , depending on whether we choose the version with a 5-inch screen or the 5.5-inch one. It is a justified value if we consider that it is not a high-end phone . Even so, if you want to acquire a model to make calls, write emails, browse, download simple applications and little else, the Alcatel POP 3 perfectly fulfills this task. In addition, its design is discreet, comfortable and simple, leaving the maximum prominence to its touch screen at all times.
