What are 5D ultrasounds and why should you be interested in them?

Fetal ultrasounds are a way to monitor the state of our baby inside the womb during pregnancy. They were a real revolution when they began to be implemented in gynecological clinics in the late 1970s, although it was really in 1960 that the first ultrasound device for pregnancy became available . The truth is that a lot has rained since those first 2D echoes, and we have gone from poor quality to 3D, 4D and 5D ultrasounds, the latest revolution in the sector.

If you ask your mother or grandmother about the control of pregnancy in their maternity period, you may be surprised that either they had no ultrasound in the nine months, or only one. Now the follow-up is much more exhaustive, with monthly ultrasounds in private centers to see the baby's health at all stages . Normally, 3D ultrasound scanners are used, sometimes activating the 4D during the checkup to observe some moving planes, as long as our little one is seen. So how do you see it in 5D?

At the moment, only some specialized private clinics have this latest generation ultrasound machine. It is based on a type of ultrasound, which allows you to capture three-dimensional images of the baby in real time inside the womb. You will have to check in your city which centers have this technique, since depending on which one you call they have different prices and promotions. In any case, to give you a better idea of what a 5D ultrasound consists of, whether or not it is worth doing it, what is the difference with the others, or what is the best time to do them, do not stop reading. We reveal it below.

What is a 5D ultrasound?

5D ultrasounds are nothing more than a 4D ultrasound with high definition HD resolution, which allows us to obtain a more detailed and clear image, being able to see our baby with more definition. Basically, it is as if we obtained a real-time photo of the inside of the uterus, reaching the exact place where it is located, inside the placenta. Thus, the specialist will look for the best position by passing the transducer through the belly, in which the conductive gel has previously been placed. We will be able to see in detail his nose, eyes, mouth, as well as the hands, legs, umbilical cord ... It is even possible that he delights us with a grimace or smile, or that he is with his eyes open, fully awake for the occasion.

We will perceive the skin tone with a naturalness that is not appreciated in 4D ultrasounds, enjoying each moment with much more precision.

Differences between 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D echoes

We have already explained what a 5D echo consists of, but if we compare it with a 2D or 3D the difference is enormous. In the early days, 2D ultrasounds offered a simple black and white image of the fetus on a plane. The purpose was simply to be able to perform a fetal diagnosis to see possible abnormalities. The emergence of 3D ultrasound meant the ability to show the fetus in three dimensions, with a much clearer image. Thanks to them, the midwife or gynecologist is able to detect possible malformations of the baby early. They are the ones currently used in most clinics in Spain, both public and private.

The arrival of the echoes in 4D caused a lot of expectation: we could already see the fetus in motion. That is, not only did they allow you to see your face realistically, it was also possible to observe other details, such as a hand movement or see how you suck your finger. This is always important for parents, who can strengthen emotional ties with their baby early,so important from the beginning of conception. In any case, the fact that the 5D echoes give us the possibility of seeing our son in HD Live quality makes, as we explained above, the level of realism much higher. Almost like he's already out with the dads. Hence, many choose to do a report of this type. In addition, it should be noted that in the 5D echoes different obstacles are not appreciated than if we can sometimes find in the 4D, such as the umbilical cord or shadows.

What is the best time to do a 5D ultrasound?

If you are going to be a mother and have thought about doing a 5D ultrasound, or you are going to be a father and want to give one to your partner, but you are not sure what is the best time for it, it is important that you know that it can be done from week 12 The problem is that this week the facial features are not yet formed, although you will be able to see your baby's little body. The most advisable thing is to do it between weeks 24 and 32, since it is from these weeks when you can observe the well-defined face in detail , as well as movements or grimaces. Most centers that use this technique allow you to repeat the session in the event that your baby is in a bad position, does not show well, or is very asleep and does not feel like being disturbed.

As for prices, these vary a lot from one center to another, so we advise you to ask in several and study it with your partner. Of course, most include different promotions to make the visit more attractive, such as a basket with products for the baby, collage photos framed with the best snapshots, of course all the images of your baby taken during the session and even a video edited with music to keep that moment forever.

Some tips before having a 5D ultrasound

If you have already scheduled your appointment for a 5D echo, it is important that you take these tips into account so that the session goes as well as possible and you can see your baby in all its splendor.

  • Avoid exciting drinks (tea, coffee, soft drinks ...). Actually this should always be done throughout your pregnancy.
  • Drink a lot of water in the previous days to clarify the amniotic fluid and thus achieve greater clarity. In any case, drinking lots of water (about 2 liters a day) is a tip that you should take into account during the 9 months of pregnancy.
  • Avoid applying moisturizer or anti-stretch mark cream on the belly two days before the session. The oily film that this leaves on the skin can cause the image to not be detected clearly and thus not achieve the expected results.
  • If you want your baby to participate during the ultrasound, be moving and active, have something sweet while you wait for your appointment at the center where you are going to perform the session (a chocolate or peach juice can be used).
  • Do not forget to go with comfortable clothes. The session usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes, so it is best to wear a shirt and pants that you can easily lower a bit at the time of the echo.
