The resistance is an aspect of increasing concern to Samsung , which begins to include higher quality materials in their most cutting - edge smartphones like the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S6 . However, if what we want is an off-road mobile that withstands the worst conditions, the Galaxy Xcover series is undoubtedly the most indicated. The South Korean company has presented the third generation of this range of ruggedized phones, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 , which comes with an even more robust design that has received a military certificatefor its resistance. If you look at its technical profile, it is a mobile input range , simple and manageable. Its screen measures 4.5 inches, leading processor of four cores and a camera 5 megapixel with water photos function. We tell you all about the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3.
Display and layout
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 has a screen with a size of 4.5 inches , relatively compact so that we can handle it with ease, even with one hand. The panel has a resolution WVGA , which is equivalent to 800 x 480 pixels . With this configuration it reaches a density of 207 dots per inch, quite discreet if we compare it with the most advanced mobiles of the brand, but more than enough for the content to be seen clearly. Being a resistant smartphone, Samsung could not help but cover the panel with a sheet of resistant glass to avoid scratches and breakage.
As we have already advanced, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 boasts of solidity thanks to the STD-810G certificate, which ensures its resistance to falls from 1.2 meters from height . In addition, it is resistant to dust , humidity , vibrations , solar radiation and drastic changes in temperature . Samsung also adds the IP67 certificate that allows us to submerge the equipment to 1 meter deep for a maximum of 30 minutes. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 maintains the navigation buttonsunder the screen, but instead of being capacitive as in other terminals of the brand, the three are physical to make it more comfortable to access them. It includes an Xcover key on the side that activates the LED flash in flashlight mode and also opens the camera if we press twice in a row. The terminal has a rough appearance, with a reinforced housing in the corners and a thickness of 9.95 millimeters. The downside is that it weighs 154 grams, enough for a mobile with a 4.5-inch panel.
Camera and multimedia
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 has a fairly modest camera, but that will be enough to take a few photos in a timely manner, even under water . Its sensor has five megapixels and allows capturing images of 2,592 x 1,944 pixels resolution. It is accompanied by an LED flash that, as we have already mentioned in the previous section, serves as a flashlight if we press the Xcover key on the left side. If we click twice on this button, we will have direct access to the camera from any screen, to be able to take a photo or make a video quickly -speaking of video, the terminalRecords in HD720p. It also includes other common functions such as autofocus, face detection, HDR mode, geo-tagging or digital zoom. The front camera has two megapixels of resolution.
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 supports the formats of audio and video more common, so that your player does not have problems opening the files. It also has a voice dictation and recording system , headphones and a speaker .
Power, memory and operating system
Samsung has not specified which processor model the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 has, but they have indicated that it is a quad core that operates at 1.2 Ghz clock frequency. It is accompanied by 1.5 Gb of RAM and 8 Gb of storage, expandable with MicroSD cards of 32 Gb at most.
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 comes standard with Android 4.4 KitKat, but the company plans to update it to Android 5.0 Lollipop after its launch, scheduled for next April . The update will bring new features such as notifications on the lock screen, Smart Lock, the private mode or the new interface , with simplified and better organized design. In addition to the Google service package , Samsung also provides some of its own applications such as the Samsung KNOX security system , its own private modeand ultra-battery saving mode .
Connectivity and autonomy
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 is an all-terrain mobile, but for this, in addition to being resistant, it needs the necessary connections to work anywhere. Carries an altimeter antenna GPS and digital compass . It also connects to 4G and 3G mobile networks, but if we are close to an access point we can also connect to the Internet through WiFi . Samsung includes an NFC chip , a technology that is used to make payments with the mobile or synchronize accessories among many other options. The physical connections are the usual ones, that is, a MicroUSBand a 3.5mm headphone jack .
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 battery has 2,200 milliamps, a fairly large capacity for a simple mobile with a 4.5-inch panel. The autonomy has not yet been confirmed by Samsung, but it is a key aspect in a mobile of this type.
Availability and opinions
Samsung will show more details of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 next week at the CeBIT fair , but they have already confirmed that it will begin to arrive in European stores from next April . The price is quite high if we only look at its technical profile, about 275 euros in free format - although the price in Spain is yet to be confirmed. Do not forget that it is a very resistant mobile, designed for a specific type of use, but despite this Samsung could have stretched its specifications a bit. The third member of the Galaxy Xcover seriesit becomes even more robust and adds new functions, highlighting above all the option to take underwater photos or the Xcover key to activate the flashlight or camera. Upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop is a plus, as long as it's not too late.
