The Samsung C49HG90 is one of the most spectacular monitors that we can find on the market . This is a huge 49-inch curved screen with an ultra-wide 32: 9 aspect ratio. But it not only stands out for its size and format, but also for its technical characteristics. And the C49HG90 uses Quantum Dot technology, is compatible with HDR images, offers a response time of 1 ms and is capable of reaching a refresh rate of 144 Hz.
Although it can be used perfectly for work, this monitor is focused on the gaming world. We notice this in some details such as the back lighting or the gaming OSD panel. We can even play and work at the same time with the Easy Setting Box application, in addition to seeing two teams at the same time. In short, an impressive monitor not suitable for all pockets. The Samsung C49HG90 is for sale in Spain with a price of 1,500 euros. We have had the opportunity to try it for a couple of weeks and we will tell you what we think .

You will need a large desk
As you can imagine, this monitor is not exactly small. Its size is really impressive. During the test days there has been no one who has not been amazed by him when they see him. So we will need a large desk to be able to place it correctly.
On the one hand, if we do not want the screen to protrude from the desk, we will need a table of at least 120 centimeters. This is what the screen measures from side to side. On the other hand, the Samsung C49HG90 has a depth of about 37 centimeters from the beginning of the back to the end of the base.
This large size does not mean that Samsung has not taken care of the design. On the contrary, we are facing a very neat and elegant screen. For example, the frames around the panel are minimal, with just 1.5 centimeters at the top and side edges. We do have a somewhat thicker lower edge, but without reaching 2 centimeters. Here we have the Samsung logo, three small circles showing the location of the buttons and the power LED.
The rear is covered by a plastic casing and, due to the curve, has a considerable thickness. At the top of the case we have an open strip, we understand that to expel the heat. And in the central area is where we have the anchor to place the base. Right here we find the Arena Lighting lighting system , composed of a pulsed light that is reflected on the rear wall of the monitor.
The base could be divided into two parts. On the one hand we have a strong arm that holds the screen. This allows you to rotate the screen and adjust it in height and tilt . In addition, it has a plastic cover with which we can organize the cables.
The arm is attached at the bottom to an inverted V-shaped foot , very similar to the bases that Samsung uses for some of its televisions. This foot is also made with a plastic outer shell. Perhaps for the price that this monitor has, Samsung could have opted for a metal base.
Now that we have seen what it is like on the outside, let's see what it hides inside. As we have anticipated, we are facing a 49-inch VA panel screen . This has a curved format, with a 1800R curvature , and with an aspect ratio of 32: 9 . So its resolution is fixed at 3,840 x 1,080 pixels, which is a lower vertical resolution than that of 16: 9 televisions or monitors.
Its ultra-wide format is equivalent to having two 27-inch 16: 9 monitors . This will allow us to forget about multiscreen configurations, thus avoiding intermediate frames. That is, the Samsung C49HG90 is perfect for those who need to work with many applications in view simultaneously.
On the other hand, Samsung has used QLED technology in this new monitor. It provides truer and brighter colors, especially red and green tones, compared to other conventional monitors. Also, like QLED TVs, the Samsung C49HG90 includes the new Metal Quantum Dot . These metallic-coated quantum dots offer more natural colors, something very important if we work with photography.
Another of the most interesting features of the Samsung C49HG90 monitor is that it supports HDR . These types of images offer a higher level of brightness, with deeper blacks and brighter whites. But to take advantage of these features we will need to meet certain requirements:
- To use HDR we will need a graphics card that supports HDR , a game compatible with HDR and that the monitor connects to the computer through HDMI, Display Port or Mini-Display Port
- We can connect a UHD Blu-Ray reader to the monitor and use HDR
- It will also work with an Xbox One S, Xbox One X, PS4 or PS4 Slim and a game with HDR
That is, as long as we have a compatible equipment we can use the compatibility with HDR images .
The Samsung C49HG90 features a VA panel that minimizes light leakage. In addition, it provides a 3,000: 1 contrast ratio and highly detailed colors. It offers 8 preset picture modes , designed to get the most out of different types of games. So we will have special modes for FPS, RPG and AOS. But also one sRGB and a cinema mode.
However, we will need to do a little calibration, as none of the preset modes are perfect . Several of the modes offer an incorrect white balance, obtaining a flat image. This may not affect us when playing, but if we are editing images it will be a problem.
However, just by touching the value of the red, green and blue colors from the custom mode we already achieve great results. Once calibrated, the monitor can reproduce almost 95% of the DCI color space .
And if we talk about the angle of view, we have two different situations. On the side, both the curve and the VA panel do their job and there is no distortion of any kind. However, the vertical viewing angle is not that great. If we look at the screen from the wrong height we will get a distorted image . If we do not center the height of the screen well, we will have dimmer colors and a black that will turn gray.
Working with the Samsung C49HG90
Although the Samsung C49HG90 is a monitor designed for gamers, professionals will also enjoy this monitor. Especially if they need to work with many applications or windows open at the same time . Or also, for example, if you need to work with large Excel sheets.
With such a large surface, we will have a lot of space to place tabs and applications. Of course, we will have to do it manually , since neither Windows 10 nor macOS know "how to deal with" a 32: 9 aspect ratio.
However, Samsung offers us a couple of solutions to make the most of the screen. The first is Easy Setting Box , an application that allows you to divide the screen or show multiple screens in different sizes with a simple click.
The second is the Picture-by-Picture function . This function divides the screen into two parts and shows two different input sources at the same time, one on the left and one on the right. We can also select the size of the image for each screen, being able to divide it into two 16: 9 screens, a 21: 9 screen and another 11: 9 or the other way around.
Lastly, the Samsung C49HG90 includes Eye Saver mode . This minimizes the emission of blue light waves so that our eyes rest if we spend many hours in front of the computer.
Playing with the Samsung C49HG90
However, it is at the time of playing when we will enjoy this monitor to the fullest . During these days we have tested various types of games to see how they look on the Samsung C49HG90. All those that are adapted look spectacular, but it is fair to highlight the shooters and car games.
Of course, we must bear in mind that not all games are adapted to this format . We will have no problems with the newer games, such as Call Of Duty WWII, Mass Effect Andromeda, FIFA 18 and even Rayman. However, it is possible that in some older titles we have to play in 16: 9 format, having black stripes on the sides. We can put them in full screen, but they will be deformed.
The same thing happens when, for example, we watch movies or YouTube videos. In general, any content that is not adapted will appear with black stripes on the sides .
As for the performance of the screen, it is magnificent. If we have an AMD graphics card we can use the FreeSync function . And if not, nothing happens, we count a refresh rate of 144 Hz . So if our graphics card is powerful enough, we will have a very fluid image.
Still, on such a high priced monitor, we have missed the G-Sync feature for syncing with Nvidia graphics.
Conclusions and price
The Samsung C49HG90 is a really impressive monitor . It offers a huge 49-inch screen with a 32: 9 aspect ratio, great resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. Also, its viewing angle is very good, at least when we stand on the side.
That is, we will have the same space on a single monitor that we would have with two 27-inch monitors . And with that said, we must bear in mind that we will need a machine capable of moving games with this resolution.
In general, this monitor has left us a great taste in our mouths . Its special aspect ratio can make it difficult for us to get used to it, but once we get the hang of it we will love it. It's going to be tough going back to our "plain" 24-inch monitor.
Another aspect that can throw us back is its price. The Samsung C49HG90 is already on sale with an official price of 1,500 euros .
