Spaniards spend an average of 4 hours a day watching TV

Watching television continues to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment in our country. The DTT (digital terrestrial television) is the most demanded platform, either open or payment. Most of the Spanish population, 82.8 percent, consumes DTT channels , while other platforms such as satellite television only convince 4.3 percent , and 12.9 percent opts for television for cable for Internet TV . How much time do we spend watching TV? The middle, for the last quarter of 2013, it is 252 minutes per person per day, which is the same, 4 hours and 12 minutes a day , according to a study just published by the CNMC (National Market and Competition Commission).

In Spain there are 20 free-to-air television operators and 11 pay television operators . However, there are two large programming channels that monopolize an important part of the audience, both on DTT and the two generalists. They are Antena 3 and Telecinco , each of them with an average audience of 14.1 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, according to Kantar Media. They are followed by TVE1 (10.1 percent), La Sexta (6.3 percent), Cuatro (5.8 percent), FDF (3 percent), La 2 (2.4 percent) and Neox(2.2 percent). Audiences are concentrated by large multimedia groups, with 29.5 percent for Atresmedia and 29.2 percent for Mediaset . The RTVE group, for its part, attracts 16.3 percent of viewers.

By age , there are certain differences in the audience of open DTT . Those under 18 years of age prefer channels belonging to Mediaset (32 percent of the audience) and 22.8 percent tune in to Atresmedia programs . Instead, it is the segment of the population over 65 years of age , the group where the audience is more distributed: 26.7 percent for Atresmedia , 25.6 percent for Mediaset and 20.2 for RTVE .

The economic crisis continues to be seen in the evolution of pay television services in our country; this modality closed last year with a penetration of 8.1 percent , which represents a decrease of 0.7 percent with respect to the previous year. The total number of subscribers to pay TV offers , including mobile TV, reached 3.89 million in Spain at the end of 2013, with an increase of 33,000 customers compared to the previous quarter. They are distributed in 1,621,000 subscribers for satellite TV , 1,142,000 for cable operators , 747,000 for Internet television, 217,000 for pay DTT and 146,000 for the rest of the platforms including mobile TV . Slightly more than half (50.4 percent) of pay TV customers contract this service as a package together with other telecommunications services, such as fixed telephony and fixed broadband.
