As we all know, there are currently dozens of different messaging applications. WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram or Line are some of the best known. Among all these, WhatsApp is, without a doubt, the most popular of all. However, and as with other services such as Facebook or Twitter, in China they offer a variant of WhatsApp. We are talking, of course, about WeChat. And the app is news because, recently, it has reached one billion users globally, according to the Financial Times.

This application, compared to the others that we have discussed, offers a great variety of possibilities . In addition to instant messaging, voice and video calls, and moments, WeChat has a friend system similar to Google+ circles, where you can find friends near you to add. The application even has a wallet to make payments through it. For all this, it is not surprising that WeChat picks up such a high number of users.

Tencent, owner of the app and other major brands such as League of Legends or Clash Royale, among others, has reported that the number of users on WeChat increases 15.8% annually. However, these data can be misleading. That is, when talking about users, we are talking about the accounts created in the application. This data is greater than the number of people who use the app, since a person can have several accounts. Still, the WeChat data is staggering. We are talking about 902 million daily users , and an approximate average of 38 billion messages sent per day.

One of the main reasons why WeChat has become so important is the blocking of WhatsApp by the Chinese government. However, statistics on the origin of users do not mark China as the main source of these. However,  many Chinese citizens living abroad use it on a daily basis , in order to keep in touch with family and friends.

For this reason, and for the options it offers, WeChat is quickly becoming the main competitor of WhatsApp . We will see in the future if it will end up surpassing the number one messaging apps.
