Microsoft Lumia 535, we have tested it

Recently, the American company Microsoft launched the Lumia 535 in Spain , a low-mid-range smartphone that can be purchased in stores for 120 euros . We're talking about a mobile that comes with a screen five inches , a processor Snapdragon 200 from Qualcomm , 1 gigabyte of RAM , operating system Windows Phone 8.1 with the updated Lumia Denim or a front camera of five megapixelswith a wide angle. We have had the opportunity to test it thoroughly, and this time we are going to analyze all its features in the next test of the Microsoft Lumia 535 .

screen

The Lumia 535's screen is five inches and achieves a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. The pixel density on the screen is 220 ppi. The screen is capable of offering more than 16 million colors. The screen technology is IPS. Includes Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection .

Screen five inches of the Lumia 535 from Microsoft comes with a timid resolution of 960 x 540 pixels , but that does not stop to offer him a sharpness and a vivid colors that have seemed negligible for the type of smart phone before we we find. Of course, the fact that the pixel density on the screen is set to 220 ppi ends up affecting the image quality, and it is during video playback when we can really appreciate the limited image quality offered by this type of mobile .

This screen is housed on an IPS panel , which we have to emphasize that it offers viewing angles somewhat lower than those we would like to find in a smartphone oriented towards everyday use . The moment we place the Lumia 535 on a table, when looking at the screen from different angles we can see that the colors lose their intensity as we increase the viewing angle, and the image begins to darken at the widest angles ( something that is probably largely to blame for screen reflections that occur both indoors and outdoors).

One positive aspect that deserves a mention when talking about the Lumia 535's screen is the brightness . The maximum brightness level is high enough to use the mobile outdoors , which is welcome considering the problems that mobile phones in these ranges usually offer when using the screen in open spaces.

In our test of the Lumia 535 , we have not detected the touchpad sensitivity issues that have forced Microsoft to release a patch .

Design

Measurements: 140.2 x 72.4 x 8.8 millimeters, 146 grams of weight. Five housing colors: orange, green, white, blue and black. Interchangeable housing .

The Lumia 535 is presented with a continuous design with respect to the lines that Nokia introduced in its mid-range smartphones belonging to the Lumia series . The entire mobile phone is made of plastic , a plastic that has a very soft finish that is pleasant to the touch , in addition to its design minimizing the effects of fingerprint stains - and even scratches - on the case. The Lumia 535 is a smartphone that feels very light in the hand (despite what its 146 grams of weight might lead to think ), and its dimensions ( 140.2 x 72.4 x 8.8 millimeters) make it a mobile that can be used perfectly with one hand.

Analyzing in more detail the design of the Lumia 535 , on the right side of the terminal we can see the power button (located slightly above the central part of the side) and the volume button (located above the power button). Both buttons have a correct position in terms of position and accessibility with one hand, regardless of whether we are going to use the mobile with the left hand or the right hand. In the upper part of the terminal is the audio output, and in the lower part we find the microUSB output .

The housing of the Lumia 535 is removable and can be replaced housings five colors : orange , green , white , blue and black . This case is removed in a very simple way by inserting the nail into the microUSB port , and simply pushing the case out we can gain access to the entrails of the terminal (where the microSD card slot , the Dual-SIM slot and the battery are located. (also removable)).

The quality of the photos taken with the Lumia 535 is surprisingly acceptable for the type of camera and the type of smartphone in front of us . Photographs taken at close range offer good quality, and snapshots taken outdoors are capable of capturing the landscape we are immortalizing with an acceptable quality. If we had to highlight a negative aspect of the camera itself, that would probably be the slightly dark tone with which the photographs seem to be immortalized.

One of the features that we liked the least about the Lumia 535's camera is the excessive opening time of the Lumia Camera application . Carrying out a test with a stopwatch, this application takes between four and five seconds to open (what's more, it even gives us time to see a “ Loading… ” message ), which translates into a too long wait when immortalizing a scene quickly.

But it is the front camera of the Lumia 535 that really draws attention when it comes to analyzing the multimedia aspect of this smartphone. We're talking about a camera that is also five megapixel , and its main advantage is that it has a wide - angle (aperture f / 2.4 and 24 mm focal length lens) which is oriented towards providing a greater angle when take a selfie . In other words, this characteristic means that the front camera of the Lumia 535 allows us to take a selfie with several people within the same image .

And beyond the acceptable image quality offered by this secondary camera (whose maximum resolution in the photographs is identical to that of the main camera), what has really caught our attention when analyzing the front camera of the Lumia 535 is the Lumia Selfie app . This is an application that allows us to retouch and improve any self-profile photograph that we take with the front camera . The retouching options are very wide (ranging from filters to beauty enhancements that include corrections to the smile, teeth or eyes, including a lifting mode).

Testing the Lumia Selfie application more thoroughly , what we really liked about the enhancement and beauty effects of this application is that they work as we would expect: the application is capable of detecting our smile to allow us to enlarge it and come out more smiling in the image; And the same happens with the eyes or teeth, which we can perfect when editing our selfie . In short, Microsoft was right when it came to announcing the Lumia 535 as a mobile that will attract the attention of lovers of selfies .

Processor and memory

Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor (model MSM8212) with four cores (Cortex-A7) with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. Adreno 302 graphics processor. 1 GigaByte RAM memory. 8 GigaBytes internal storage space, expandable through a microSD card up to 128 GigaBytes .

Smartphones with Windows Phone operating system generally require lower technical specifications than Android mobiles need to move the interface and applications smoothly. In the case of the Lumia 535 , the processor we are inside a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 running at a clock speed of 1.2 GHz with a memory RAM of 1 gigabyte .

In terms of performance, the Lumia 535 copes with ease in everyday use that includes actions such as browsing the interface, surfing the Internet , watching videos, listening to music or sending instant messages. In a somewhat more demanding use, the Lumia 535 maximizes the performance of its processor, and is able to move with relative fluidity (except for the occasional slight jerk in scenes with a greater number of objects and movements) even games like Angry Birds Epic or Sonic Dash , two of the titles that we have tested to analyze the performance of this terminal.

The internal storage capacity of the Lumia 535 , officially, is 8 GigaBytes . But the files installed at the factory in this mobile take up some space, and the actual internal memory capacity that we have at our disposal is around a figure of between 4 and 5 GigaBytes . This capacity can be supplemented with an external microSD memory card of up to 128 GigaBytes .

Operating system and applications

The operating system that the Lumia 535 has factory installed corresponds to Windows Phone 8.1 accompanied by the Lumia Denim update . This update introduced the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system (and, specifically, the Lumia 535 ) innovations such as the Cortana voice assistant , the organization of the icons on the main screen through folders and general improvements in the terminal's performance .

Windows Phone 8.1 in the Lumia 535 moves smoothly , and we have not detected any performance problems when moving through the different screens of the interface. Anyone who has not yet had the opportunity to try this operating system should know that its operation is not far from Android , at least in terms of the most basic functions. For example, at the top of the screen we find a notification center that, in addition to displaying the notifications themselves, also includes quick access to options such as WiFi , Bluetooth , Camera or Brightness. .

When it comes to factory-installed apps, the Lumia 535 comes with a large repertoire of apps installed as standard. When we turned on the mobile for the first time we have come across applications like Internet Explorer , Facebook , OneDrive , Lumia Storyteller , Skype , News , HERE Drive + , Lumia Creative Studio or El Tiempo . All these applications can be complemented with the apps available in the Microsoft Store, the place from which it is possible to download hundreds of free applications directly to the mobile.

Although in Windows 10 for mobile there are many corrections with respect to Windows Phone 8.1 , each time we analyze a smartphone with this version of Windows Phone we cannot do more than remember all the small details of the interface that support many improvements. For example, in Windows Phone 8.1 it is very difficult to find a specific option within the Settings menu, since there are dozens of categories with names that do not help to find a specific option (for example, why is the storage capacity section internal is named “ Storage Sensor “?).

Battery and autonomy

The battery capacity that the Lumia 535 incorporates inside is 1,905 mAh . We are talking about a standard capacity for a smartphone that incorporates a five-inch screen and mid-range (or entry-range) technical specifications. In our tests we have been able to verify that the Lumia 535 is capable of reaching a day of autonomy with daily use (reviewing different web pages on the Internet , sending and receiving instant messages, playing music, etc.). In the event that we make a somewhat more intensive use, the autonomy is reduced to five or six hours .

According to the official autonomy figures provided by Microsoft , the Lumia 535 reaches between 11 and 13 hours of autonomy in conversation, while in standby mode the autonomy reaches up to 550 hours . Of course, the Lumia 535 battery is removable .

Price, availability and conclusions

The Lumia 535 from Microsoft is now available in Spain at a price of 120 euros , and is available in two variants (a variant with a single slot phone card and another variant with a slot Dual-SIM ) and five colors of housing: black , white , orange , green and blue .

In our test of the Microsoft Lumia 535 we have seen that Microsoft has managed to take the reins of the Lumia range after the acquisition of Nokia's mobile division . The Lumia 535 is a smartphone that lives up to the 120 euros it costs in stores and, except for very specific companies that have specialized in offering mid-range mobiles at knockdown prices, we can hardly find them in the range of terminals with Android operating system a mobile of similar performance (performance, not technical specifications, eye) at a similar price .

Putting the positive and negative aspects of the Lumia 535 on a scale, on the positive side we have to highlight the modern, youthful and customizable design , the multitude of editing options when taking a selfie and the price set at 120 euros , while on the downside it is worth highlighting the improvable viewing angles of the screen (or, at least, the improved reduction of reflections) and the excessively long opening time of the Lumia Camera application . As a neutral conclusion we will also mention theoperating system of this smartphone , Windows Phone 8.1 ; The choice between Android and this operating system corresponds to a personal decision, so we cannot include the operating system of this terminal as a positive or negative characteristic.
