PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro? Which one interests me the most? Is the PS4 Pro worth investing more money? Although the PS4 Pro will be three years old in 2019, many still wonder if it is worth it compared to its little sister. The doubt comes to any buyer who wants to buy the Sony console and see the difference in prices between the two machines. At Tuexperto we have already talked about the differences between the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro. And we have debated whether we should buy one or the other. But now that a couple of years have passed, we have asked ourselves again, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro, which one am I interested in buying in 2019?
Let's quickly recall the technical differences that we have between the two Sony consoles. The PS4 Slim is technically identical to the PS4 that was released in 2013, only improving on the docking ports. However, the PS4 Pro does offer a substantial improvement, especially in the graphics processor .
The latest model has a more powerful processor, adds 1 GB of extra RAM to run the system and improves the graphics. The latter is the most important, doubling the number of GPU cores to achieve a throughput of up to 4.20 TFLOPS . We rescued a small table that we made in its day so that you can see more clearly the technical differences between the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.
This increase in graphics power makes the PS4 Pro capable of playing games in 4K resolution and in HDR. However, as you may have read by now, most games do not run in native 4K resolution .
It is up to the developer to choose if they prefer native 4K resolution with lower game fps; or if you use one of the scaling techniques proposed by the Japanese company. At the time, Sony recommended developers to use the technique known as "checkboarding", which they say will allow to achieve an image quality very close to 4K without penalizing performance.
Improved Titles for PS4 Pro
When the PS4 Pro hit the market, the truth is that there were very few titles that took advantage of the greater power of the latest Sony console. Now, more than two years later, this has radically changed. Virtually every flagship release comes with improved graphics for the PS4 Pro . In addition, many of the games that were already on the market at that time have been receiving patches to improve their graphics.
How do we know if the game that interests us takes advantage of the graphics of the PS4 Pro? If we buy it in physical format we will have a small symbol on the box that tells us that it has been improved for PS4 Pro . Red Dead Redemption II, Spider-man, Call Of Duty Blackout or FIFA 19 are just some of the latest titles that improve with PS4 Pro.
So I buy the PS4 Pro, right?
To determine which version of PlayStation 4 is best for you, you need to consider three determining factors. The first is your television. If you have a TV with 4K resolution and compatible with HDR images, I personally think you should buy the PS4 Pro . With the latest Sony console and a compatible TV, you'll get more realistic textures, sharper graphics, and richer colors. In addition, in most games you will get a somewhat higher performance (often invaluable to the human eye).
If you do not have a 4K TV, do not plan to buy it soon or you always play on a monitor, save a few euros and buy the PS4 Slim . You will not notice practically any difference at a visual level between the Pro and the Slim if you do not have the right screen.
The second factor to consider is whether you are going to use the PlayStation VR . If you want to enter the world of games in virtual reality, you better opt for the PS4 Pro . By having greater power, it substantially improves the graphics of Sony VR glasses.
Finally, you must take your budget into account . Right now we are in a time when we do not have too many offers, since we have just passed dates with very strong discounts on both consoles and games. We have done a little research and now we can get the 500 GB PS4 Slim with two controllers for 330 euros . That same pack but with the 1 TB PS4 Pro goes up to 430 euros .
