Samsung's low and mid-range family continues to grow. Now, all of them are minted under the same letter A, but going from the A10 to the A80. In this case, Samsung has allowed us to test the Samsung Galaxy A70, which is on the border of the mid-range and the high-end. And it is something that is noticeable both in its finishes and components, as in its user experience.
He highlights that it is an all screen mobile . And what a screen! They are 6.7 inches of SuperAMOLED panel in which there is a small notch or notch in the shape of a U. It is large, but not overwhelming thanks to its 20: 9 aspect ratio. Or what is the same, very panoramic. But its 4,500 mAh battery or triple camera system is not far behind. Or your fingerprint reader on the screen. Now, there are many things to unravel in your user experience.

All screen, too much screen
The Samsung Galaxy A70 is a terminal for those who like large screens. As we said a few lines above, its panel is SuperAMOLED , which ensures good saturation and high brightness in case we need it. Not forgetting that this technology allows individual pixel lighting to save battery while showing notifications or the clock on the screen.
My viewing experience is more than satisfactory. With a FullHD + resolution for its 6.7-inch screen we can enjoy Netflix series and YouTube videos with a sense of quality that resembles the high-end. It does not matter that its format is widescreen up to 20: 9, because it allows us to adjust the contents and take advantage of its horizontal screen without losing too much information. Or use the mobile vertically with just one hand (it is not that wide, but elongated). Having reached 2K resolution would have been a luxury that would not differentiate the user experience too much, but it would be a point in favor. Even so, I have not had any problem using this mobile in broad daylight. And it has a really wide angle of view until the colors fade. Without a doubt, a great screen, where Samsung does things very well.
Of course, just having frames can be a problem . In a regular use of applications, holding the terminal vertically, we have not had a major problem. In fact, I have enjoyed its proportion. But there is a big but. When I have held the mobile horizontally to play, for example, I have noticed that the screen recognized involuntary pulsations due to the flesh of our hands that served as support. Also when I have used the mobile in bed or on the sofa, lying down. Changing the way you hold the terminal can cause us to touch certain parts of the ends of the screen, and Samsung does not seem to have included any solution for these involuntary keystrokes. Something that has clouded our experience at various times.
Crystal substitute design
The design of the Samsung Galaxy A70 attracts attention. And not only to our eye when we have taken it out of the box, looking like a high-end mobile with its brightness, gradient colors or the elegance of its curves , but also to the touch. You can see that Samsung is a company with tradition in this design, and the finishes of this Galaxy A70 are proof of all this experience.
No button for Bixby assistant(Thanks for that, Samsung), and the distribution of the rest is the usual one: an on / off button and two volume control buttons, all of them in the upper right part. It has a microSD memory card slot, and two nano SIMs in the upper left corner. The rest of the ports are at the bottom, with space for 3.5 mm mini jack and USB type C, as well as a speaker. An effective design except when it is placed in a horizontal position to play or watch videos, when we can cover the speaker grill with the index finger. Something in which we have had to re-educate ourselves. On the back, the simple Samsung design that is slightly reminiscent of Huawei is maintained. The whole rear is clear, with the Samsung logo in the middle, those yes, and the lens capsule in the upper left corner.
The design is comfortable to grip with one medium size hand (164.3 x 76.7 x 7.9 millimeters). And the sensations on it are pleasant and of quality, with a weight of 183 grams that does not feel especially heavy. In fact, it must be said that the sensations are of a glass finish, although the reality is a bit different. Samsung has used what they call 3D Glasstic , which is nothing more than plastic with a glossy finish that mimics glass. The downside is that it imitates both visually and practically, so it won't stop being a nest of fingerprints, no matter how clean or clean you are.
The gradient black color does not seem like a great success to me either . It reminds me of a raft of oil. A surface that, together with the tracks, could well be oil or oil. It is a color that is not long-suffering and that stands out for its reflections, but in a way that, in particular, I do not find too attractive. Of course, this Samsung Galaxy A70 has other much more practical colors for fingerprints such as light blue or pink. Which also stand out for their own tonality and not just for the gradient reflections.
Double security in mid-range
Samsung does it again. We checked it in the Samsung Galaxy A50, which already had a fingerprint reader integrated into the panel despite being a mid-range mobile. Of course, its operation left us cold, with a slowness and a number of errors that were sometimes exasperating. Luckily, in the Samsung Galaxy A70 things are better . Much better. Obviously it is not the supersonic fingerprint reader of the S10, nor does it act as fast as the integrated reader of the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it costs half that of both terminals. Still, my experience is satisfactory. And, although it may take a second or more on some occasions, it is rarely the time that it fails or does not detect me. Something that helps make the experience smooth, although not the best we can find in the market.
Even so, if you are one of those who does not have time to waste when you pick up your mobile, we recommend the use of facial recognition. Samsung has left behind the security of scanning the user's iris. But the speed with which, at times, this Galaxy A70 has recognized my face is amazing .
These two security measures, combined, have allowed me to hold the phone close to our face and quickly enter it by unlocking it instantly. I'm not going to lie: there are times when he takes time to recognize our face or our footprint. But, in general, the sensations are positive, being the least the times that one of the sensors has failed. And almost completely forgetting to use our unlock pattern.
Three cameras for day use
As with the on-screen fingerprint reader, Samsung brings the triple camera system to its mid-range mobiles. Something that gives the device versatility, since not only does it have a decisive camera and that it bets on clarity with an aperture of f / 1.7, but it is supported by another ultra-wide angle lens (8 megapixels and aperture f / 2.2 ) to capture wide scenes, and a third lens focused on capturing depth to achieve a better portrait effect (5 megapixels and aperture f / 2.2). Now, this is the theory, the practice is a little further from the data of the paper.
In my experience, the main sensor takes good photos where it is bright . Here details such as the hair and the textures of the garments are seen and appreciated. Sin when burning some photos in full light, but the results are detailed. Of course, where there is no light, photographs are poor in detail. Yes, the colors and shapes are distinct and visible, almost better than natural in some dark environments. But no, the photo loses definition and detail, as well as realism. And it is something that can be appreciated just by zooming in on one of these snapshots. A shame since the terminal loses versatility in difficult lighting situations.
Regarding the bokeh or portrait effect, the results are as expected in a mid-range device. It manages to detect the different planes well, although it is not surprising like the highest-end devices, of course. In dynamic focus photos, or portrait mode, the Samsung Galaxy A70 allows you to set the level of blur to taste. Of course, it does not always correctly detect elements such as the rims of glasses, nor does it apply the best possible trimming to loose hairs that come out of the head, or other elements of detail that protrude from the main subject. Still, it's pretty decent, although it's far from realistic. The worst taste in my mouth was trying to change the bokeh effect afterwards. And is that Samsung has other similar effects to deform the background, although the edit tool has not worked for me in these cases.
Of course, Artificial Intelligence and photography go hand in hand in this Samsung Galaxy A70. I am referring to the image optimizer, which is capable of detecting up to 20 different elements or situations through the device's cameras , as long as this function is active in the interface. Something that applies certain parameters such as more saturation, more contrast, blur effect and other qualities. The good thing is that we can control it with a button on the interface, in case your application modifies in a way that we do not like the image we frame. It is usually an aid for those who want more striking results, although it does not usually help when it comes to getting a realistic photo.
As for the camera for selfies, housed in the notch of the screen, it is 32 megapixels with f / 2.0 aperture. And it suffers from the same problems as the rear sensor: with light it manages to detail any photo, presenting more than remarkable details. Without light, or against the light, things change . The image loses definition, being able to appreciate that watercolor-like finish if we zoom in on the image. As for the portrait effect, the situation is similar. Only with great lighting will we achieve the best results, always marking the effect of more. That is, without it being too natural.
Performance and battery to match
The Samsung Galaxy A70 has a Qualcomm mid-range processor: the Snapdragon SM6150 that has presented us with a more than acceptable performance. Of course, it is an 8-core processor and, most importantly, it is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM. So it has ease to move applications like WhatsApp, Instagram, and even games like Candy Crush Friends, Pokémon GO or Godus without problems. The performance is fluid and allows us to keep several applications active in the background . It is not the most agile mobile in loading applications, but I have not noticed any slowdown or notable stop in my week of use. And this is a real plus considering that it is a mid-range, since any hard user or demanding user, except for games like Fortnite, can take advantage of it.
And the same must be said of the immense battery of this mobile. Everything that is great also has autonomy with its 4,500 mAh . All this without neglecting fast charging, of course. In this week of use I have not needed any extra charge throughout the day. If it is true that, as intensive users, I have not been able to take advantage of its autonomy for more than one day. But it already says a lot in its favor that it tolerate the use of games and applications that take advantage of the GPS and the screen, in addition to the usual use: WhatsApp messages, photographs, uploading some Instagram Stories, etc.
After reviewing the highlights of the Samsung Galaxy A70, I am left with a somewhat bittersweet feeling. And it is that this terminal could have rushed a little more in aspects such as cameras to become a benchmark in the mid-range. I also did not like the sound section, in which the quality is quite good, but the volume control seems to go from 0 to 100, without comfortable midpoints. Something that I cannot understand, and that is that it would be the perfect device to watch videos if we did not have to use headphones. Something that leaves the multimedia part somewhat lame.
Sure it has its strengths. The screen is the main one , with a large but manageable size, and a more than remarkable image quality. The all real screen is a quality reality in this terminal. Even more so with an integrated fingerprint sensor that responds as it should, at least most of the time. Its performance is also not far behind, and it offers all the battery that a user could need.
Without a doubt, a balanced terminal for the quality mid-range. Its design and operation (if it were something more agile) could pass for high-end, but it is its cameras that are further behind. Of course, we must not forget that it is a mobile of 400 euros . A good choice for those who bet on the appearance and performance of the mobile, and not so much for the cameras.
