The Brother MFC-J880DW is a printer that sits on the border between the universe of home and office and offers good versatility with options to print, copy, scan and handle faxes. With speeds of up to 12 pages per minute in black and white and 10 pages per minute in color, this kit makes an excellent companion for the home. Plus, it comes standard with double-sided printing to save on paper costs. The Japanese company has also wanted to reinforce a key aspect such as mobile printing with features such as WiFi Direct, NFC to print with a touch through mobile or Mopria certificationto print from an Android smartphone without having to install a dedicated app. The Brother MFC-J880DW is available on the market for a price of 162 euros. This printer has passed through our hands, we tell you our impressions.
Balanced speeds
The Brother MFC-J880DW is committed to speeds of up to 12 pages per minute in black and white and 10 pages per minute in color. The automatic double-sided printing function could not be missing in a team of these characteristics, although it must be taken into account that with this mode the printing speed is considerably reduced. The maximum resolution of this model is 6,000 x 1,200 dots per inch. As we said, it is a model designed primarily for the home, although you can also find accommodation in those SMEs that have small workloads. Specifically, the maximum monthly cycle for the MFC-J880DW is 2,500 pages per month , althoughBrother recommends a range between 50 and 1,000 prints. By the way, we liked the silent mode, which allows us to print documents with very little noise (yes, the drop in speed is noticeable).
An accessible interface and compact design
One of the points that we have liked the most about Brother for some time is the leap that its interface has taken. The MFC-J880DW incorporates a 6.8-centimeter touch screen that follows in the wake of this interface, using large icons to access the most common functions such as copying, scanning or web applications in just a few clicks. Among these applications we have document scanning to Excel, PowerPoint or Word that can be edited directly in these applications. In addition, it is also capable of working with the Evernote, Dropbox, Box or Google Drive cloud services , in addition to OneNote or the Facebook social network. The use of the interface is quite intuitive, although we think that access to the WiFi connection needs to be improved, since at first it can be confusing.
In terms of design, the Brother printer abandons the characteristic landscape format of previous models for the input of paper and returns to a more classic format with the input tray with the sheets in portrait mode. Still, we still enjoy a compact device that blends well into any home. Its dimensions go up to 400 x 341 x 172 millimeters, with the dominance of the black color throughout its body. Paper handling includes a 100-sheet input tray and a 50-sheet output tray . This input tray supports media between 64 and 220 gsm. We also have a manual feed slot for heavier formats (up to 300 grs)and photographic tray. In addition, although we will talk about it in depth later, it introduces an ADF (automatic document feeder) of up to 20 sheets.
A good set of connections and mobile printing
It is evident that one of the trends that have spread the most in recent years and that manufacturers take care of the most is the section on connections and mobile printing. And the Brother MFC-J880DW is no exception. This equipment includes WiFi connectivity to be able to install it anywhere in the house without worrying about cable problems. We also have WiFi Direct connectivity . This solution consists in that the printer creates its own "network" to which we connect directly with the device and from there the printing is carried out without having to go through the local network. Within mobile printing, the Mopria certification stands out, which favors direct printing with an Android smartphone or tablet without having to install a dedicated app. For the most advanced mobiles, NFC connectivity is also included that allows printing work through touch.
By the way, another point that has been improved in recent times is its dedicated Brother Print & Scan app . This platform has a more complete interface that includes interesting options such as a copy preview to know how our document will look after making the copy. To do this, the document must be placed on the glass or in the automatic document feeder. Another interesting option is to manage the sending of faxes from the mobile device, both documents that are housed on the glass or the printer's document feeder and directly files from the mobile itself. Without a doubt, a step forward that will give us a lot of play when working with the printer.
Copy, scan and fax
The Brother MFC-J880DW incorporates copy, scan and fax functionalities. The inclusion of a 20-sheet automatic document feeder is to be welcomed , which makes these options much quicker when working with multi-sheet documents. The copy function achieves speeds of up to 6 copies per minute in both black and white and color , with a maximum resolution of 1,200 x 2,400 dots per inch . In the scanner field, an optical resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 dpi is achieved with scan speeds of up to 3.37 seconds in monochrome and 4.27 seconds in color. The digitization formats that can be worked with are documentsPDF or JPEG images in the case of sending them directly to a memory card or USB memory . In the case of working with the application on the computer , the range of options opens to work with a greater number of formats, such as OCR documents (editable with a compatible application). The fax reaches a standard speed of 14.4 kbps.
Price and reviews
The Brother printer can already be found on the market for a price of 162 euros. This model becomes a good option for users who want a home computer with a plus of quality and functions, such as the ability to print double-sided documents or the inclusion of an automatic document feeder for copies, scans and fax. . In addition, it has an excellent set of connections for mobile printing such as NFC , WiFi Direct or Mopria certification .
