What does it mean for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to be waterproof?

iPhone 7

They have arrived on time. Yesterday afternoon, the Apple company presented in society the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus , a couple of phones that arrive with a design very similar to that of the previous generation, but that without a doubt, carry a good number of news. One of the most interesting is, without a doubt, its ability to resist water. This is actually based on the fact that both phones are  IP67 rated under IEC 60529 , as stated in the datasheet. Ok, but, beyond the technicalities, what does this mean? Will I be able to submerge my iPhone 7while enjoying a swim in the pool? Will I be able to take pictures underwater like there is no tomorrow? What if instead of water, my iPhone gets wet with coffee with milk or cola? We tell you what it means that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are waterproof .

What does IP67 mean

The acronym IP stands for " Ingress Protection " or " Degree of Protection ". It is an international alphanumeric system with which it is indicated if the materials with which an electronic equipment is manufactured, in this case a mobile, are capable of supporting interaction with solid and liquid objects. The first number refers to solids and the second, to liquids. The 6 , for example, indicates that the iPhone 7 is protected to the maximum against dust. The number 7 reports that they enjoy water resistance, but only to one meter. Nothing else.

Be very careful with the dives

Yes, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are water resistant, but as we indicated, the IP67 certification is a little more limited than the IP68, which is the one that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and Sony have. Xperia XZ . In the latter case, the phones can submerge up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes, while the iPhone 7 can only do so at 1 meter for half an hour . This means that, in principle, you will not be able to spend the summer submerging your iPhone 7 in the pool and that it is worth more than as soon as it falls into the water, you pick it up soon. You will have, as we said, 30 minutes .

Actually, and as indicated in the table of the IP rating , the number 7 indicates exactly “Protection against the effect of immersion between 15 centimeters and 1 meter . The 8 , which is one of Samsung's leading edge phones , offer protection against long periods of immersion under pressure.

So what can I do?

Diving is not recommended for long periods and on a regular basis, but nothing will happen if you drop your mobile in the pool, if you splash it with water or if you read your messages while taking a relaxing bath. All of this is possible with the new iPhone 7 . But be careful: forget about submerging yourself in sea water, because salt can have very corrosive effects on the components of the phone. If a cola, a coffee with milk and any other liquid other than plain water spill on you , it is very possible that the phone will also be useless: especially if it has been completely submerged. The sugar , for example, and other elements that are in its composition, can make your brand new iPhone in Julystop working.
