Tricks to make Windows 10 go faster

With the passage of time, our operating system usually begins to give us a speed problem, either due to its prolonged use or due to problems derived from the components of the equipment.

We should not worry too much, since this has been quite normal. But that does not mean it stops being quite annoying when what you want is to work fluently with the computer .

In this article, we are not going to give you a magic recipe to solve speed problems with Windows 10 , but we are going to give you a series of tips and tricks that will come in handy to improve its performance. You will see that by touching certain options you will notice substantial changes. Go for it!

Disable startup programs

One of the most widespread tips among Windows users since ancient times is to reduce the list of programs that run automatically when we start our PC . You would be surprised at the number of programs that slip into this list without realizing it and that are absolutely unnecessary.

To disable them, you just have to press the right button of your mouse on the Windows start button, and select the option "Task Manager". Next, you must click on the "More details" drop-down option . Finally, select the "Startup" tab, where you will see all those programs that slow down startup. With the right button it disables all those that are not essential.

Make Windows 10 look less

Another classic is to disable the visual effects of Windows 10 , which no one doubts that they are very attractive, but if you have a limited graphics card or little RAM, it would be better to do without all these additions.

From the Windows 10 search box we enter sysdm.cpl, and in the pop-up window , we follow the path “Advanced options> Performance> Settings”. From here we can fiddle with the available visual options, deactivate them one by one or remove them all at once with “Adjust for best performance”.

Delete temporary files

It is practically impossible to prevent the accumulation of files from past installations or residual documents from badly uninstalled programs. Although they do not pose a danger to the computer, they can affect the performance of Windows when executing certain tasks.

Fortunately, Windows 10 has a  troubleshooter that you will find within the "Control Panel" or through the search box. This option basically performs maintenance tasks to free up space on our disk.

cortana

Disable Cortana

The Windows 10 voice assistant also consumes our system resources to function. If you hardly get any performance out of it, it would be better to  do without Cortana  and use the old Windows search box.

To do this, you just have to click on the circle right next to the taskbar, to activate the assistant. Next, click on the gear wheel located on the right to display the options, and thus proceed to deactivate everything that we deem appropriate .

quick start

Activate quick start

You may have this option disabled by default, but Windows 10 has a quick login mode that you may want to have enabled. To do this, go to "Power Options" either through the path " Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Power Options" or by right clicking the mouse and accessing "Power Options".

Access the "Choose the behavior of the on / off buttons" menu. Once inside, first click on "Change currently unavailable settings" and below, then in "Shutdown settings", you will see the option to activate the quick start of the system .

Get the most out of Windows 10

By default, Windows does not perform at 100% of its capacity, so, if you think you need to give your operating system an acceleration, you just have to follow the path " Control Panel> Hardware and sound> Power options" or through Right clicking on the mouse and accessing "Power Options" (yes, again).

Once there, you will see the different energy plans available. Click on "Change plan settings" and then "Change advanced power settings". In this last section, you can click on each of the power plans (Recommended and Balanced), the different configurations available to manage power consumption .

Of course, depending on the options you have activated, it is more than likely that you will notice an increase in the temperature of the equipment .

virtual memory

Change system virtual memory

This option is specially designed for those computers with a somewhat scarce RAM memory and that have little storage space .

To do this, follow the following path: Control Panel> System and Security> System> Advanced System Settings> Advanced Options> Settings (Performance)> Advanced Options, and finally we look for Virtual Memory and click on the "Change" button .

Next, you must activate the option "Custom size", and proceed to its configuration. The most common is to set the initial size, the value that appears below as recommended , in our case, 1,906 MB.

Regarding the maximum size, it is advisable to enter a value equivalent to double or triple the maximum capacity of the RAM .

Install an SSD drive

If you make the decision to change the hard drive of a lifetime for an SSD drive. You will notice a real change in performance both in the startup and in the execution of the system that you laugh at the advice we have given you so far . And without the need for the SSD to have many GB of space.

So far our tips for your Windows 10 to operate faster . If none of these tricks work for you, perhaps it is time to spend the money on some component, and change the graphics card or the RAM memory of the device. You may even get a new laptop, although we hope it is not so bad.
