The five keys of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 is the fifth generation of a series that stands out for its portability, design and performance. The evolution is evident and we find ourselves in this team with current features. Seventh generation Intel Core i7 processors or a battery that exceeds 15 hours are some of the most prominent. But there is more. The 2017 ThinkPad X1 Carbon is 10 percent smaller than its bigger siblings. We can say that it is the company's thinnest and most compact laptop to date. In addition, it is much more secure thanks to its optional fingerprint reader and all the possibilities that Windows 10 offers.

This model is available from 1,689 euros. If you are interested and want to know all the details, do not stop reading. We reveal the five keys of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017.

1. Strong and lightweight design

When we look for a laptop, we tend to look, above all, that it is slim and manageable. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 accomplishes this perfectly. It has only 1.14 kilos of weight and a thickness of 15.95 millimeters. At the same time, the chassis is really strong thanks to the carbon fiber, which also makes it light. Its four layers and a magnesium alloy protective case give it greater resistance. We will not have any problem if drinks are spilled on us or we fall out of bed. The equipment has undergone 12 military specification tests, passing more than 200 durability tests.

To all this must be added a size 10 percent smaller than previous generations. The new X1 Carbon is easier to hold and transport. So you can take your work with you wherever you want without weighing you down too much. Another of the great novelties of this generation is that Lenovo has managed to keep the 14-inch screen in a 13-inch chassis. It can be chosen in various configurations with WQHD (2,560 x 1,440) or Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution.

2. More power and performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 is powered by Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, depending on the configuration we choose . The model that will provide us with the best performance is the one that integrates an Intel Core vPro i7-7600U with a 16 GB RAM (LPDDR3 at 1866 MHz). There is also the possibility to choose it with 8 GB. When it comes to internal storage, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 is available with the following options:

  • 128GB SATA SSD
  • 180GB Intel SATA SSD
  • 256GB Intel PCIe TLC OPAL2 SSD
  • 256 GB PCIe TLC OPAL2 SSD
  • Intel PCIe TLC OPAL2 512GB SSD
  • 512GB TLC OPAL2 PCIe SSD
  • 1TB TLC OPAL2 PCIe SSD

We have, therefore, an advanced laptop, with great power, with which we can play games and use tools for work without too many problems. Its performance should be smooth and fast, especially if we opt for the highest setting. At this point we must also mention built-in Dolby Premium audio sound and an HD webcam with a resolution of 720p.

3. Maximum security

Lenovo has wanted its new ThinkPad X1 Carbon to be safe first and foremost. In fact, it  is the first laptop to offer FIDO biometric authentication for Paypal. Thanks to this new function, we will be able to access Paypal using the fingerprint with the reader optionally included in the equipment. In addition, the Lenovo-patented Match-on-Clip fingerprint sensor adds a layer of security to the camera. The images that are collected from fingerprints will be saved exclusively inside the unit created for this purpose. Thus, we will not have to worry about someone other than us wanting to log in.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 is governed by Windows 10. We will not only be able to enjoy functions such as the Cortana assistant or the new Microsoft Edge browser. We can also make use of Windows Hello. It will allow us to enter our session with just a touch or glance without having to enter a password.

4. Battery and connections

Lenovo has included an improved battery in this notebook. The company ensures that with it we will have autonomy for about 15 hours. Logically, this will depend a lot on the level of brightness or use that we give it. The good thing is that it boasts fast charging, so we will achieve 80% capacity in just one hour . Thus, we can recharge it for more than 12 hours or on trips.

On the other hand, this model has Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A wireless WAN technology, so it offers LTE connections up to three times faster . When it comes to connectivity, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 makes use of Thunderbolt 3 technology, which offers data transmission up to 8 times faster than that of a USB 3.0 and 4k port. They have not turned their back on the usual USB connection either. Specifically, we find two USB 3.0 ports and HDMI connections.

5. Availability and price

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 is already on sale in Spain from 1,689 euros. The price will increase according to the configuration we choose. The intermediate option with Intel Core i7-7500U processor and 8 GB of RAM costs 2,219 euros. The most expensive is the one that mounts the same processor, but with 16 GB RAM. In that case, it will be necessary to pay 2,679 euros.
